As an actor, you probably didn't come into the business with much of a plan beyond training, auditioning, and hoping for the best. That system doesn't achieve stellar results for most of us, leaving us in survival mode while we "pay our dues" and try to find success.
SURVIVAL MODE often includes:
*Allowing your time to be controlled by others who often aren't even paying you - i.e. working for free*
*Begging managers and agents to meet with you through repeated calls and inquiries hoping representation will solve your problem
*Undervaluing yourself and your talent, and, as a result allowing yourself to be treated as a commodity
*Taking whatever roles show up, even if they aren't very good or worse, you're embarrassed to be playing them.
SPOILER ALERT: THIS IS NOT COOL.
It lowers our self-esteem. It lowers morale. It undermines your self-confidence.
You might be saying to yourself, "Well that's the way the business works. What choice do I have?" You've gotten into this business because you love acting. You love the creative process. You love the variety. You love the collaboration with other actors and writers and directors. But when faced with the reality that making it as an actor isn't always about how talented you are, the picture changes.
The business becomes frustrating, stressful and unfulfilling. Over time, needing to stay ready to drop everything and run to an audition or slap together a self-tape, working on projects or taking roles you're not aligned with, even having to forego important family and social events, all while trying to stay afloat financially - it starts to take its toll. It often leads to FATIGUE, BURNOUT, RESENTMENT and maybe even thoughts of QUITTING the business altogether.
TIME FOR A CHANGE.
NOW, I'm not telling anyone to stop auditioning. And yes, there are some parts of any major undertaking that we're not going to enjoy, but we need to stay connected to what made us choose this profession in the first place. In my experience, that usually happens when we work on projects we love, performing roles that inspire us, with people who we respect and enjoy working with. It's really that simple. That can only happen consistently when we take back a little control over our lives and careers. That happens through CREATION.
Running around on everyone else's schedule to any audition that shows up is not a plan. And there's absolutely NO GUARANTEE that the perfect "breakout" role will show up - EVER. The only way to be 100% sure that it will is to KNOW WHO YOU ARE, KNOW WHAT YOU ARE BEST AT and CREATE that role FOR YOURSELF.
Once you begin this process, you'll have as many chances at this as you'd like. You never have to worry about competing for these roles. They're all yours, right from the start - #LessStress. You can work with the people you enjoy working with - #MoreFun. You'll be INSPIRED on a regular basis. And the fact that EACH PROJECT WILL BE TAILOR-MADE FOR YOU will certainly contribute to you performing at your best.
This system also gives you a chance to grow over time. To test different skills and get feedback. To get better as an actor. To start growing an audience. And maybe, just maybe, be happy each day instead of feeling like you're "serving time" while waiting for the freedom that success will ultimately bring you. In fact this strategy will MAKE TIME SERVE YOU from day one. Because each day that you're not on someone else's television or movie set, you'll be building a platform of your own which will change your relationship with the industry forever. It will make you more valuable. It will remove the "commodity" label. And you will begin to amass a body of work that no one can duplicate, because it is so specifically and undeniably YOU. And here's the point when FATIGUE, BURNOUT and RESENTMENT become RENEWED ENERGY, INSPIRATION and EXCITEMENT about acting career and about your life.
This won't be all sunshine and rainbows. But neither is the antiquated strategy of fighting every actor on the planet for any decent role that happens to show up. At least this way, you get to be YOU. You get to choose your work. You get to choose your collaborators. You get to set the standard for the quality of your material. You get to be excited about consistently building characters that inspire you. And you get to keep putting them out into the world until the world sits up and takes notice. And if you bring your talent, and your drive and your passion, it ultimately will. And when it does, if you do it right, the industry you've been chasing for all these years will begin chasing you. Not with a single role in a single project, but with they may just arrive with money and resources to help you do more of what you're already doing. I don't know about you, but that sounds like success to me.
So take a minute and remember why you began acting in the first place. Seriously. Right now close your eyes and remember where you were when you decided, "this is what I want to do for the rest of my life." What did that feel like? What did you see? I'm betting that creating work you love, with people you love working with was part of that vision. Well, despite what the industry might have you believe, that option is available right now.
WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
BECOME YOUR DREAM.
